Sauna Electrical Installation

CSLB License #1113915 · C-10 Electrical Contractor

Specialty Electric wires home saunas across San Diego County: a dedicated 240V circuit from your panel and the hookup to the sauna heater. The heater's manual sets the breaker and wire size. One sauna maker lists its standard heaters at 30 to 40 amps, so check that your panel has room first. When the job needs a permit, we pull it, and quotes are free.

Sauna electrical requirements

We wire sauna heaters on a dedicated 240V circuit from your panel, hard-wired to the heater. The heater's manual sets the breaker and wire size. As an example, Almost Heaven lists its standard heaters at 30 to 40 amps on a hardwired 240V connection, and some of its premium heaters need up to 60 amps.

Is your panel big enough?

A sauna heater adds a 240V circuit to your panel. Whether your panel has room comes down to a load calculation: what your home already uses plus the heater. If it doesn't, see our page on electrical panel upgrades. Planning a hot tub too? See spa and hot tub electrical.

Permits

In the City of San Diego, adding to or altering your wiring needs an Electrical Permit, and the City issues it only to a licensed contractor or the property owner. Specialty Electric holds California C-10 license #1113915, and when your job needs a permit, we pull it.

Frequently asked questions

What circuit does a home sauna heater need?

The heater's manual says. For the sauna heaters we wire, that's a dedicated 240V circuit, hard-wired from your panel, with the breaker and wire size from the manual. As an example, one sauna maker lists its standard heaters at 30 to 40 amps and some premium heaters at up to 60 amps.

Can I plug a sauna heater into an outlet?

Not a hard-wired heater. Makers of hard-wired sauna heaters, such as Almost Heaven, specify a 240V hardwired connection made by a licensed electrician, with the breaker and wire size in the heater's manual. Check the manual before you buy the sauna, so the circuit is planned.

Will I need a bigger electrical panel for a sauna?

Not always. A load calculation compares what your home already uses plus the sauna heater with what your panel and service can carry. Many homes have room; some need a panel upgrade first. Ask us to look at your panel when we quote.

How much does sauna electrical installation cost?

Every job is quoted before we start, and quotes are free, so we don't publish a flat price. Three things set it: how difficult the labor is (for example, how far the sauna sits from the panel), how long the job takes, and the cost of materials.

Do I need a permit to wire a sauna in San Diego?

In the City of San Diego, adding to or altering your wiring needs an Electrical Permit, and the City issues it only to a licensed contractor or the property owner. When your job needs a permit, we pull it, and we tell you when we quote.
